Aluminum boat Plans

Taking aluminum boat plans and placing them side-by-side with fiberglass, steel or wooden design sketches can often help to determine which type of craft you'll want to invest in. Aside from the many different build-able boat designs available, intended usage will also factor in heavily; aluminum frames will last a bit longer when used for freshwater fishing as opposed to wooden or fiberglass models that are designed to withstand the harshness of saltwater.

Either way, the art of building boats from home is now an affordable and engaging hobby that requires not only a basic understanding of the process, but also the amount of time involved and knowing which materials will yield the best possible results. With so many different aluminum boat plans at your disposal, narrowing it down may be the most difficult decision of all.
Aluminum alloy kit boats will take some time and money to put together when starting from square one, yet knowing how to weld is a plus that can end up saving you thousands of dollars. Cutting the materials yourself can also help to keep your wallet intact. Some of the advantages of working with aluminum as opposed to steel include easy handling because of the difference in weight. It's also easier to cut and can be done with standard woodworking tools.
With aluminum boat plans, the alloy itself is so much lighter than steel, which means that saving on the cost of fuel can also become a reality. Steel boat construction material is so much heavier than aluminum that it only makes sense to go with the lighter grade alloy. Resale value is also something to consider; when it's time to move on, the extra money in your pocket can be invested in your next project. One of the only drawbacks to using this material is that it's more expensive, yet absorbing the impact is worth the investment because of its resale value.
Other aluminum boat plans can be seen as finished products; for example, a number of yachts for sale and other boats for sale are made primarily from this material, yet the smaller flat bottom boats are more affordable and easier to build. Flat bottom aluminum boats are best suited for calmer waters such as lakes or ponds as to where "choppier" conditions can cause instability. The Jon style boat is commonly used for hunting as its side panels are lower than the Dory style that is used mainly for fishing.
Both of these designs are configured to reduce any extra added noise that can startle the fish or any other intended prey. These two sets of aluminum boat plans can be accessed or downloaded for little or no cost at all, yet it's also important to note that step-by-step plans with diagrams are known to be more reliable.
When compared to fiberglass boats, the pluses and minuses have been well documented. From used boats to the brand new, fiberglass housing is more difficult to maintain because of its composite base. Chiefly constructed from oil-based polyester resins and glass fibers, it is subject to cracking if not taken care of properly, which entails inspecting the components above and below the waterline.

Sailboat Plans

With some time and energy, you will likely be able to locate several free sailboat plans posted online. If you dream of building a sailboat but are looking to save on money, you may think that free boat building plans are the way to go. And they very may well be a great solution, if the plans you have found meet the following criteria:

1) The plans have been tried and tested. You need to make sure that any sailboat plans you choose have a proven track record - be they free plans or paid for plans. If the plans are posted anonymously or if you cannot find any boat builder who has used the plans, you should proceed with much caution. Remember, just about anyone can dream up a boat design and post it to the internet, but this is no guarantee the boat will float.

Ideally you will be able to find wooden boat plans that have a variety of testimonials supporting the plans from people who have actually built boats using the plans. Unfortunately, most free sailboat plans available online do not have this kind of documentation supporting them, although there are some very cheap sailboat plans that do provide this kind of information.

2) The plans were developed by an experience sailboat builder. You should also do research on the person who is posting the plans. If this person is known as an experienced boat builder, than you can be pretty sure the plans are reliable, be they paid or free sailboat plans.

If you know who has made the plans and know of people who have used the plans successfully you can be fairly sure that the sailboat plans you are considering will be worth using.

Classic wood boat plans

You may think that if you are looking for classic wooden boat plans that you will have to pay a lot for these plans. After all, adding the word classic or classical, normally translates in monetary terms to adding expensive too. Just think about classic cars for example. If you are looking for a quality classic car, you know you will have to pay a high price tag for it.
However, when it comes to finding high quality classic boat plans, you don't always have to worry about these breaking the bank and leaving you with no money left to buy champagne to sip on deck during your maiden voyage. Nor do you have to think that classic wooden boats are just for the rich and wealthy, when you can choose to build your own classic boat. Instead, you can be confident that you'll be on the water and turning peoples heads in now time.
Now, while classic boat plans may be more complex than building a simple rowing boat, there is nothing to stop the amateur boat builder from attempting such a build. It would be advisable that if you are going to embark on building a classic boat, for the best result, you have some previous experience of boat building and/or woodworking. Some of the techniques involved can be fairly complex. However, this is not essential and shouldn't put you off if this is your dream of building your own classic wooden boat.
There is little point building a wooden rowing boat just for the sake of it to learn the skills, when you can just learn them whilst building your classic boat instead. It may just end up taking a little longer, with a few more mistakes along the way. Compared with the price of buying a wooden boat, you will still be making a considerable saving though and just think of the satisfaction of knowing you have built a beautiful classic wooden boat and imagine taking to the water in it when you finish.
Many of the methods involved are also the same as a simpler build, just on a grander scale. A lot of the difference will be seen in the finish of the boat, with the classic wood finish being an old favourite of classic boat designs, showing off all that lovely wood. Therefore, you will want to make sure you do your research into how these finishes are achieved and make sure that you spend time and focus on this. After all, this will be what you see every time you (and everyone else) sees your boat, so you will want to make sure it's done right.

Wooden Boat Plans

With wooden boat plans and blueprints dating back through history, many of these concepts and designs are still being used today. Although many changes have been made since the inception of watercrafts in general, the basic tenets of boat construction remain a solid standard for fishing boats of all sizes.
Imagine traveling back to the days of yore when the most basic of tools helped boat builders discover the pains and joys of hard work as they pushed forward with wholeheartedness to finish what they started. Only the means to modify and perfect these designs have changed through the years as modern day wooden boat plans continue to improve in terms of catering to sailors who can't seem to get enough of nature's elements.
The 1960s kick-started a different revolution of sorts by popularizing power boats and pleasure cruise yachts. The sport of water skiing began gaining enough momentum and exposure to catapult the motorboat industry into a screaming success.
Those who weren't already near the water packed up their belongings and hauled their boats to the nearest lake or river. Literally thousands of new and used boats for sale wound up sparking an idea or two for a number of wooden boat plans to accommodate a variety of water-related activities. Skiffs, sloops, catamarans and other types of sailboats flocked through the channels and past the jetties while their owners reveled at the feeling of the wind and the sun and the open water working in unison to capture the perfect day.
Yacht owners also took advantage of this new craze by trading in their used boats for new ones; cabin cruisers stole the spotlight as all different types of yachts for sale flooded the boatyards and showrooms. The boat business boomed as new generations caught the wakes of the waves left behind by those who floated through the waterways of yesterday.
All because of the different number of wooden boat plans available today, various groups of people are able to enjoy the old and the new styles of boats for sale. The newer designs by definition range from sailing yachts (sailboats) to motorized propulsion yachts. Cruisers and racers fall into separate categories as well, which calls for some further explanation.
Sailboats measuring 20 feet are labeled as day sailor yachts or dinghies, mainly because they're used for shorter outings as opposed to the weekender model that measures approximately 30 feet. This type of yacht usually comes furnished with lifting keels for the purpose of docking right on the beach, and is also capable of housing small groups of people.
Styles may vary; some employ the use of wooden boat plans while others are erected from fiberglass and/or or steel. The name is fittingly apropos as weekenders are mostly used for quick 2 to 3 day getaways.
The most popular of the yachts for sale is the cruiser, which isn't really one type at all. Cruisers can range from 25 to 50 feet in overall length (LOA) while most of the longer styles have cabins with kitchens, bathrooms and sleeping quarters as well.
Another aspect that separates the cruiser from the dinghy is its inability to maneuver deftly, which is one of reasons why its traveling speed averages 6 knots (7 MPH), thus living up to its name. Some boat builders use wooden boat plans for construction as to where others prefer less conventional methods.
Racing yachts are in a league of their own in terms of being unconventional. The comforts of living are virtually nonexistent as style is less important than the objective of winning. On and offshore races take place on an annual basis while some events can span hundreds of miles.
Speeds upwards of 35 knots (40 MPH) can be reached depending upon atmospheric conditions. Racing yachts can range in lengths of 20 to 65 feet as the larger model races hold significant traditional value. What wooden boat plans have allowed the seafaring world to accomplish over the last few hundred years is truly amazing.

Small Boat Building Plans

Many people have taken up building small boats for pleasure or as a money-making hobby. Some people get therapeutic results by having a woodworking project which they spend their spare time building. There's something relaxing about creating a boat in your garage, on your own time. No deadlines. No boss telling you what to do. It's all up to you how to do it and when to do it. And when you finish your boat, there's the pride of seeing it and showing off your creation to friends and family. Then, finally, there's the joy of launching it into your favorite lake or river!

I have personally been involved in building three boats in my lifetime. The first one I built as an 8th grade woodshop project. I have to admit, it was a little overwhelming at that age, but, with a little encouragement from my dad, I did finish it before the school year ended. The design was a simple 6-7 foot, plywood dinghy style boat. I have to admit, my brothers and I spent many hours floating around in it after it was completed! (Yes, it did float!)

The second boat building experience was during my senior year in high school. Again in woodshop, our whole class built a wooden drift boat. It was a little more complex than my first boat, but I was older and we had the supervision of our shop teacher. It turned out beautiful and we all enjoyed the process and learned much about boat building.

My latest boat building project is a 16 foot wood strip canoe. I'm actually still working on it. It's about halfway done and I hope to wrap it up before summer's over, so I can put her in a lake and show her off to the world! Building this canoe has truly been fun and relaxing as a side hobby. I would recommend it to anyone.

Building your own small boat doesn't require a lot of special woodworking skills or fancy tools. I got by with a simple tablesaw, electric sander, block plane, wood rasp, a few clamps, hand stapler, and a hammer. If you'd like to check into building a small boat for yourself, check out my bio box for a link. There you'll find a great source for boat plans which come with complete step-by-step instructions.

If you'd like to find out more about building your own boat from scratch, Click Here and you'll find an excellent source of boat-building plans and instructions.

I hope you will actually try your hand at building your own small boat. It will bring you many hours of joy in the building process as well as using it in the lake!
